The house dates from 1895 and was built as the country home of Sir Walter Harris, a former Lieutenant of the City of London. It has a wealth of architectural features including some particularly fine stained glass windows in the restaurant and oak-panelling in the bar area.

Previously the restaurant was finalist in the Publican Pub Food Awards, and were awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the category of Alfresco Dining Pub of the Year and the hotel rooms a AA 4 Star rating and a Silver Award from England Accommodation for high quality and customer service. They were also short-listed for Alfresco Dining Pub of the Year.
