PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Beerhouses

Yalding

At present I do not have a list of the names of all the beer-houses in the Yalding area but they came about by an act of parliament in 1830 that allowed cottages to sell beer in their front rooms for a modest annual fee. The Act of parliament was related to the high consumption of spirits of the time.

Before 1830 Yalding boasted 7 public houses in the parish. After the Act 8 beer-houses  were added to the number of public houses.

In 1876 the numbers changed to 10 public houses and 6 beer-houses, and in 1915, 12 public houses and 4 beer-houses.

One of the last beer-houses to close was known as the "Red House" situated in the High Street.

The "Walnut Tree" was one of these beer-houses.

By 1939 the parish boasted 14 public houses.
