From the Kentish Chronicle, 30 July, 1864.
ALLEGED BURGLARY AT DARENTH.
James Rivers, for having burglariously entered the house of Sophia
Mackney, landlady of the “Chequers Inn,” at Darenth, on the 2nd May, and
having stolen two pounds of tobacco, one pound of cigars, and £1 15s.
The case against the prisoner rested wholly upon the evidence of the
prosecutrix, and there being little doubt that she was mistaken in the
identity of the prisoner, who received an unexceptionable character
extending over a period of twelve years.
The Judge suggested that there was not sufficient evidence to warrant a
conviction, and the Jury at once discharged the prisoner.
Their decision was received with applause, which was immediately
suppressed.
