Extract of a letter from Dartford in Kent, November 21.
This afternoon between 3 and 4, came hither her Royal Highness the
Princess of Orange, in good Health, attended in the same coach by the
Lady Herbert, Lady Southwell, and Mrs. Charles; and in another coach by
Dr. Douglas, Dr. Tressier, and Mr. Amyand the surgeon, followed by
another coach with inferior Waiting Woman.
She dines and lies at the "Bull Inn," and sets out every early tomorrow
morning for Dover. She came this morning from Romford in Essex, over
London Bridge. The people of Dartford received her Royal Highness with
loud of Acclamations of Joy, Bells ringing, &c, and in the Evening the
Minister of the Parish illuminated his house with 100 candles, whose
example was followed by the whole Town, and two large Bonfires were
made. After that the Minister and principal inhabitants, together at the
"Cock and Lyon Inn" over against the "Bull," and made a Bonfire of 100 Faggotts before the Window of her Royal Highness's Apartment, and their
drink the house of the King, Queen, Prince and Princess of Orange, and
all the Royal Family, at each of which the People made three lead
Huzzas, and they were tied to the Inn, which was illuminated in an
extraordinary Manner, and spent the Evening with much Cheerfulness,
drinking to the Royal Hans en Kelder, and the happy Meeting of the
Prince and Princess. And some of the Gentleman in the Company obtained
the honour of having the Ladies their Relations, and principal Woman of
the Town, admitted into her Royal Highness's Presence, who kissed her
Hand, and whom afterwards several Bottles of French Wines were ordered.
