80 High Street Dartford
The pub is believed to be the home of Kentish rebel Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasant's Revolt of 1381. An insolent tax collector is said to have indecently assaulted Tyler's daughter whilst at the house collecting payment, and was killed by Tyler with a hammer when he found out about the deed. Tyler became a popular hero, and progressed to leading the uprising against serfdom, the hated poll tax, and other grievances. The rebels met with the young King, Richard II, at Smithfield, where Tyler was wounded by the Mayor of London, William Walworth, and Tyler was taken to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, but Walworth had him dragged away and beheaded.
