The Pigot's Directory of 1872 indicated that the premises was operating under a Full license and was owned by James Budden of Chatham. James Budden was owner of a wine and spirit business before amalgamating with Biggs Brothers Steam brewery of Strood in 1897. Ind Coope & Co Ltd purchased the pub from Budden & Biggs Brewery Ltd by conveyance and assignment dated 23 March 1931. At the same time they also purchased five cottages, 26, 28, 30 & 32, The Brook and 26 Fair Row.
