MAIDSTONE POLICE COURT, REGARDING, THE RECENT BURGLARIES ROUND MAIDSTONE.
Charles Waters charged.
"Prisoner was further charged with breaking and entering the house of
George Parker, at Weavering-street, on the 25th March, and stealing
therefrom a leg of pork, a basket, a pair of boots, an overcoat, and
several other articles.
Sarah Parker said her husband kept the "Fox and Goose," Weavering-street,
and on the morning of the 25th ult. she came down at about six o'clock
and found that the house had been entered, the back window and door
having been broken open. Some fish had been extracted from the safe,
cooked on the oil-stove and eaten, and some eggs had also been taken and
about six pennyworth of brandy, besides the articles mentioned in the
charge. A screw driver produced was found on the table. Witness
identified the basket, overcoat and boots produced as her property. The
pork was, she thought, the remainder of the missing leg.
William
Cotter, a dealer, of East Farleigh, deposed to buying the pork from
prisoner for 2s on the 25th ult.
Mrs. Mary Mercer, whose husband keeps
the "Flower of Kent," East Farleigh, bought the basket for 4d, and her
son Edward had bought the coat for 1s.6d.
Prisoner was committed to take his trial at the next Assizes.

Fire at Fox and Goose pub in Weavering Street, Maidstone, caused by discarded cigarette.
Firefighters were called to a pub in the early hours of this morning
after its wooden smoking shelter, planter and garden furniture went up
in flames.
Crews in two fire engines arrived at the "Fox and Goose" in Weavering
Street, Maidstone, just after 4am and used a hose reel jet to extinguish
the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a discarded
cigarette.
Landlady Jan Williams said some of the outdoor seating has been ruined
and glass has been shattered but no casualties were reported as a
result.
Mrs Williams wasn't staying nearby at the time and was only alerted to
the fire by a friend who was driving past the pub en route to work.
The Fox and Goose will still be open as usual this afternoon.
A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "If you do choose to
smoke, use a heavy ashtray that won’t tip over easily and ensure it is
fully out before safely disposing of the cigarette."
