Originally built in 1652, The George started life as a coaching inn with hay stored above what is now the back bar.

Died.

Monday se'nnight died, after a lingering illness, Mr. Pope, landlord of the "George Inn," in Leeds, in this county.

Kentish Chronicles, 8 May, 1795.

At the sitting of the Justice's on Monday last, at the "George Inn," Leeds, John Eagles, baker, of Bearsted, was convicted of selling 11 gallons and a half of bread, which wanted 58 oz of proper weights, for which he paid £11 12s.
