I am informed that a new "George and Dragon" was built after
the original was demolished in 1936.

Above photo, 1961, showing the new build. |
I am not totally sure whether this stated out with just the name "George"
before it became the "George and Dragon, but it changed name to the "George"
(perhaps again) in July of 2018. This in turn closed in 2003 and was converted into residential
cottages and flats.
Above coin showing a travel token issued by William Best. The
British Museum says he was a tradesmen in 1668 associated with the
"George and Dragon," Farnborough. |
Above 1/2d tokens, dated 1668, issued by William Best of the "George."
At lest it shows St. George on the token.

Derby Mercury - Friday, 22 February 1745.
We hear from several parts of Kent and Sussex, that the Smugglers
behaviour is intolerable, the mischief they daily commit calls loudly on
the legislature for punishment; no longer ago than the beginning of this
week a gang of them assemble together at Farnborough in Kent, and in a
tumultuous manner assaulted Mr. Wynn, the master of the "George Inn,"
and after that broke all the windows in his house, besides other very
considerable damage.
|
West Kent Guardian - Saturday 2 October 1841.
An inquest was held at the "George Inn," Farnborough, upon the body of
John Wickenden, aged 33 years. It appeared from the evidence, that
deceased was in the act of carrying a hod of mortar up a ladder, at the
house of Sir John Lubbock, Bart., when his foot slipped and he fell
suddenly to the ground, and received several mortal injuries. Deceased
lingered in great pain until Friday last, when he expired.

APPLICATIONS FOR New Licenses.
Mr. James Martin, of the "George," Farnborough, made application
for a spirit license for his house. The house in question had
formerly had a license, but two years previously, the tenant having
left in difficulties, the house was closed, and no application was
made for the renewal of the license. It had been subsequently opened
as a beer-house by the applicant.
Granted.
