From The Courier, 12 March, 1909.

THE "HOP POLE," EAST PECKHAM.

Mr. Cripps then applied for the renewal of the license of the "Hop Pole," East Peckham.

Sergt. Castle, in opposing, quoted statistics showing that there were 8 alehouses and 7 beer-houses in the parish, or one to every 134 of the inhabitants. This house, in his opinion, was not required.
In cross-examination he admitted that this was the only licensed house which Messrs. Leney had in East Peckham, and that the premises were practically new.

Mr. Cripps, addressing the Court, said that Messrs. Style and Winch had four licensed houses in east Peckham; Messrs. Isherwood and Co., three, and Messrs Jude and Co., four; while Messrs. Leney had only one house. It would therefore be very hard if the only house which they had in this parish was closed.

The Magistrates, after a brief deliberation announced that the license would be renewed.
