South Street
Boughton Street
Above photo 1896, kindly sent by John Robertson, who says this
suffered a serious fire in the early 1900s and was rebuilt. |
Above photo, circa 1900, kindly sent by Stewart Marsh. The Post
Master William H Hills was the son of licensee James Hills in the 1860s. |
Above photo date unknown. The name of the Post Master is E. F. Spillett. |
From a Faversham paper, 17 May 1991.
Tranquility until hop-picking time.
TODAY, South Street is a sleepy hamlet amid the orchards between
Boughton and Selling.
But not so many years ago the area had to be ready for a population
explosion once a year, when hundreds of Londoners arrived for the
hop-picking.
The pub — which must have been relatively quiet for the rest of the year
— did a roaring trade, as did the butchers and general store both of
which we nature tills week.
We believe it was called Hills but if anyone knows better, please let us
know.
The picture which includes the "King’s Arms" dates from the 1920s and was
taken by Faversham photographer Theo Barber. His motor-cycle can be seen
outside the cottage next to the shop.
Note the lovely old, large-wheeled pram.
Mr Filmer, another photographer from the town, took the second picture,
probably a few
years earlier. It is quite possible that the man standing In the shop
doorway is the same man as in the first picture — perhaps he is Mr
Hills.
The King's Arms continued trading up until the 1970s, but trade declined
dramatically after the end of hand hop-picking, and the property is now
a private house. |

Project 2014 has been started to try and identify all the pubs that are
and have ever been open in Kent. I have just added this pub to that list but
your help is definitely needed regarding it's history.
As the information is found or sent to me, including photographs, it will
be shown here.
Thanks for your co-operation.
