The pub gained a Grade II listing on 20 January 1972. The pub may well have been the same building that was once called to as the "Old Swan." I do not have a date for the change as yet but I am also told that East Street was previously called Swan Lane.

IN THE COUNTY OF KENT PETTY SESSIONAL DIVISION OF TONBRIDGE.

To The Clerk of the Rating Authority of the Urban District of Tonbridge in the County of Kent.

To The Clerk of the Licensing Justices of the Petty Sessional Division of Tonbridge in the County of Kent.

To The Superintendent of Police of the Petty Sessional Division of Tonbridge aforesaid, and To All whom it may concern.

I. Harry Skinner now residing at "The Man of Kent" Beerhouse, East Street, Tonbridge, in the Petty Sessional Division of Tonbridge in the County of Kent. Beer Retailer, Hereby give you notice that it is my intention to apply at the General Annual Licensing Meeting for the said Division to be holden at the Court House at the Police Station. Tonbridge aforesaid, on Tuesday the 14th day of February next, at 10.30 o’clock. In the forenoon, for the grant to me of a Justices' Licence authorising me to apply for and hold an Excise Licence to sell by retail the following intoxicating liquor, viz:—Wines, for consumption either on or off the premises situate at Tonbridge aforesaid, and known by the sign of "The Man of Kent” Beerhouse, and of which premises Messrs. Kenward and Court Limited whose registered office is situate at the Close Brewery. Hadlow in the County of Kent are the owners and of which I am the Lessee.

Given under my hand this seventh day of January One Thousand Nine Hundred and Thirty Nine.
