From the Kentish Gazette, 22 February 1842.

On Wednesday an inquest was held at Mr. Taylor's, "Pelican Inn," before H. Hinde, esq., coroner, on the body of Charlotte Brown, a poor woman who died suddenly at the house of Mr. J. B. Bryant, of Strood.

Mrs. Bryant deposed that the deceased lodged in her house. On Wednesday morning, about two o’clock, she was seized with fits; she sent for Dr. Steele, who prescribed for her, but she continued getting worse, and died about four o’clock.

Mr. Steele, surgeon, deposed to being sent for. He found Mrs. Brown very ill of epilepsy; she had several fits; he prescribed for her and bled her, but she gradually sunk under the effects of the disease. In his opinion she died of epilepsy.

The coroner summed up the case, and the jury returned a verdict that the deceased died of "Epilepsy, brought on for want of common necessaries of life."
