Above engraving 1800s, showing some resemblance to the cottages of
Plough Yard and the Tudor House. It is possible that this was the
original inn which was later enlarged on it's present site. |

Above postcard, circa 1937. Until 1928, the Plough had been a tied house
within the estate of Frederick Leney's Phoenix Brewery, Wateringbury but
by the time this photograph was taken, former Leney's pubs were being
liveried and signed as Whitbread houses. Kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. |

A document from the Lullingstone Estate dated 1818 refers to the 'Plow
Ale House in Eynsford'. This was the first mention by name although it was
in use as an ale house before that time. An auction of goods including
'brewing copper, large mash tub, coolers, barrels and casks' suggests before
that time brewing took place on the premises. The Hart Dykes owned it in
1818 and in 1867 leased it to H & V Nichol's Brewery of Lewisham. Nichols
was taken over by Whitbread in 1891. The lease then changed hands until
being taken over by Fremlins which was then taken over by Whitbread in 1967.
Whitbread had owned the freehold since 1936 when a large part of the
Lullingstone Estate was sold. On the site of the current car park stood a
row of cottages demolished after being badly damaged by a bomb on Riverside
during World War 2.
