I have also seen this addressed as in Brenchley.
It is said the house is of 17th century origin but with renovations
taking place in both the 19th and early 20th century. The building gained a
Grade 2 listing on 24 August 1990.
I believe this changed name to the "Morello"
around about 2012, and then later to the "Poet."
Information recently sent to me from a promotional card circa 1880s give
a bit of information as to how and why the pub gained it's name.

The inside of the card says the following:
Why Standing’s Cross?
In the 1840s, if you wanted a pint of ale in Matfield you’d have gone not
to where the pub stands today, but to the cottages opposite. Here John
Standing ran an alehouse – and served his customers homebrew from barrels in
the cottage’s front room.
He had problems with the cellar, however, which flooded whenever it
rained, and so he sold his house and moved into the bakery opposite –
converting it into Matfield’s new alehouse.
When John Standing crossed the road to where the pub is today, choosing a
name wasn’t difficult.
The Standing's Cross offers the very best of fine food and drink,
in a genuine country pub atmosphere which has recently been restored
to its original interior.
The restaurant caters for a wide range variety of discerning
tastes, with steaks, poultry, fish and vegetarian dishes - as well
as traditional favourites such as Sunday Roast - all cooked by the
restaurant's resident chef.
Telephone your hosts Andy and Natasha on Brenchley (0892) 722416
and make your reservation now. Parties welcome.

Kent & Sussex Courier, Friday 19 March 1954.
Fire at an inn at Matfield.
Brigade just across road put it out.
Part of the wall in the bar at the "Standings Cross Inn," Matfield, had
to be knocked down when a beam
under the hearth of the room above caught fire on Monday morning.
Workmen already engaged on repair work at the inn helped firemen knock
down part of the wall above the
fireplace in the bar so that the smouldering beam could be found.
Then the hearth of the room above had to be removed before the fire
could be put out.
Matfield firemen, who dealt with the outbreak, had only to cross the
road from the fire station to the inn.
