The railway station of Yalding was opened on 25 September 1844 and it is possible that the pub was locally called the "Railway Inn" after the station opened and eventually officially changed name to that. However, I have reference to it being known as both in 1849.

South Eastern Gazette 5 September 1848.

MALLING. PETTY SESSIONS YESTERDAY.

The licenses for the various public-houses in the division were granted, and C. Hutson obtained a new one for the "Waterman's Arms," at Yalding.

Kentish Gazette, 4 September 1849.

YALDING. Caution.

On Saturday evening week a gentleman took up his abode at the "Waterman's Arms" (the "Railway Inn"), in this parish. The house is situated on the banks of the Medway, and the gentleman expressed his satisfaction at that circumstance, as he wished to stay a few days to amuse himself by fishing. Mine host, Mr. Hudson, thought he had got an excellent customer, but about Wednesday he handed in his bill to the stranger, amounting to 34s. The gentlemen coolly received it, but at length it turned out he had no money. The angler was consequently taken before Sir Francis Stapleton, Bart., at Mereworth; but, to the surprise of Mr. Hudson, the magistrate told him he could not do anything with the stranger, as it only amounted to a debt; his only remedy, therefore, was the County Court. For the benefit of publican and others, we may add that the gent, is attired in a straw hat and speckled trowsers. He had, it is said, managed to play the same game at Ashford.
