CENSUS 1851.

DAPSON Elizabeth, Backhurst, age 43, Retailer of Beer.

CENSUS 1861.

BESLEE Thomas, age 66, Retailer of Beer and Farmer with 12 acres.

LEVINGTON/SEVINGTON Zachariah, "Commercial Hotel," listed as farmer of 135 acres age 43. Whilst his wife Martha, also 43 was the Hotel Keeper. Chris Richford says the following:- I can't help thinking that this is at the south end of Staplehurst as nearby is Turnpike Road beer shop. On the corner of Frittenden Road is a circular house owned by the tennis club, I think this could be the old toll house which was turned into the beer shop. I reckon that the "Bell Hotel" must have become the Commercial Hotel. This part of the census doesn't mention anywhere north of Bell Lane. For instance, the "King's Head," which is on the opposite corner of Bell Lane to the "Bell Hotel," isn't mentioned.

CENSUS 1871. Census
