Caution to Beer Sellers — Hythe.
On Thursday se’nnight Stephen Mummery was convicted before the bench
of magistrates in the mitigated penalty of £2 10s. and 20s. costs,
for selling beer without a license. It appears that defendant's wife
had obtained a license under her maiden name of Celia Seal, and
defendant having married her, was advised that he could sell beer
under her license. The Board of Excise, however, thought
differently, and directed proceedings to be taken for the penalty of
£10. The magistrates on referring to the Excise Laws, could find
nothing to authorise a transfer of beer licenses, and consequently
were compelled to convict the man though they mitigated the penalty
to the lowest amount allowed by law.
