Kent Times, 8 March 1862.

Robert Chilmaid, beershop keeper, Wilmington was charged with stealing a truss of clover hay, belonging to Mr. Henry Staples, of Fens Farm, Swanley, on Saturday, the 22nd ult. It appeared from the evidence of Harridge, K.C.C. that he traced the hay to the prisoner’s back premises, and when he asked him how he accounted for the possession of it he said he did not know it was there.

Mr. Gibson, appeared for the prisoner, who bears an excellent character, called two witnesses who proved that the hay was not on his premises at ten o'clock on the night of the 22nd, and that he had not been away from home up to the time of its being found in the skittle-ground.

The Bench dismissed the case.
