Tuesday.
John Drew, a labourer, was charged with obtaining beer under false
pretences from Mr. Edward Hughes, a beer shop keeper, at North
Woolwich from whose evidence it appeared that on the previous night,
as he was closing his house, the prisoner and three other men came
up and begged to be served with two pots of beer, and they had to
walk a long distance. Witness procured the beer, which the prisoner
and his companions drank, and then ran off as fast as possible.
Witness pursued them, and, with assistance, captured the prisoner,
who behaved in a very violent manner.
Mr. William Harris, a grocer at North Woolwich, deposed that on the
previous night he was shutting up his shop when the prisoner
snatched the cap from his head and ran off with it, saying that he
had lost his own cap and must have another somewhere.
Mr. Seeker fined the prisoner £3, or six weeks’ imprisonment.
