Figgetts
Ashhurst
The only reference I have found for this pub is in the Pigot's directory.
Listed as in Ashurst under Tavern and Public Houses.
Further research suggests the premises lost it's licence when contraband
was found in the cellar and its license was transferred to the "Chafford
Arms" just up the road in Fordcombe. Unfortunately I do not know the
date of this yet, but it was sometime after 1851 when the "Chafford
Arms" was built.

South Eastern Gazette, Tuesday 25 August 1846.
Tunbridge Wells Assault.
John Coppard v. George Card.
The complainant deposed that on the 4th instant, he went to the "Black
Lion" public house to serve a
warrant on the defendant to bring him to the Wells' Petty Sessions, when
he jumped up and struck
complainant on the head, and swore he would split his skull. He then
threw complainant down and knelt
upon him and he, in consequence, spat blood.
Card, in his defence, said that when he was at the "Black Lion," Coppare
came in and said, "You are my
prisoner," and he pulled out handcuffs and a staff. He wanted
complainant to come to his house; he did not
assault him; he then called Richard Coppard, who said he was with his
father when the defendant was
handcuffed, and he did not see him strike his father. Was present with
his father and brother, and pulled
Card off; he was kneeling on them both.
George Anscombe and J. Coppard deposed that Card never struck Coppard.
Find 20s, and costs, 14s.; or in default of payment, to be committed for
one month.
