The only reference I have found so far for this pub is in the Pigot's Directory of 1828 and 1832. It was listed under Taverns and Public Houses. Also found in the Whitstable Times of 1860.

South Eastern Gazette, 15 May, 1860.

MALLING, WEST. Petty Sessions. (Before J. W. Stratford, Esq., in the chair, Admiral Randolph, Col. Fletcher, Capt. Cheere, R. Tassell, M. H. Dalison, W. Cook, and S. L. Lancaster Lucas, Esqrs.)

John Austen, landlord of the "Chequers Inn," Wrotham, was also charged with a similar offence, (for having his house open for the sale of liquor, during the prohibited hours) on the 16th ult.

Defendant, having been previously convicted, was fined £2.

From the Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald, 5 May 1860.

John Austen, of the "Chequers Inn. Wrotham, pleaded guilty to keeping open house for the sale of beer before 12 o'clock a.m. on Sunday, the 15th of April. Superintendent Hulse said the defendant had been convicted of a similar offence about three years since, and that for the last year his house had been a very disorderly one.

Fined £3, including costs.

South Eastern Gazette, 11 September, 1860.

Petty Sessions, Sept. 3. Before J. Savage, Esq., chairman, Lord Falmouth, the Hon. and Rev. Sir F. J. Stapleton, Bart., Col. Fletcher, W. Lee, Esq., M.P., R. Tassell, J. W. Stratford, and M. H. Dalison, Esqrs., and Capt. Cheere, R.N.)

This being the annual licensing day, the whole of the licences were renewed with the exception of the "Chequers" at Crouch, which was adjourned for a month, a complaint having been made by Superintendent Hulse as to the position of the present occupier’s affairs. The owner of the property said there would be a new tenant in a month.

From an email received, 24 September 2020.

Leonard Eli Ball was another of my great grandfathers, was working for Algernon Fleet of Darenth Grange. Apparently he used to travel to visit family at Borough Green in a pony and trap and often stopped at the "Queens Head."

His father, my great great grandfather was Joseph Ball(s) landlord of the "Chequers," Crouch Lane c1891-1902.

Towards the end of this time, when in his 70’s, he was hit on the head by the well bucket handle. Although he recovered, not surprisingly this hastened his demise.

Victor Ball.
