Basted Lane (Crouch Road 1901)
Crouch
The only reference I have found so far for this pub is in the Pigot's
Directory of 1828 and 1832. It was listed under Taverns and Public Houses.
Also found in the Whitstable Times of 1860.

This being the annual licensing day, the whole of the licences were
renewed with the exception of the "Chequers" at Crouch, which was

From an email received, 24 September 2020. Leonard Eli Ball was
another of my great grandfathers, was
working for Algernon Fleet of Darenth Grange. Apparently he used to
travel to visit family at Borough Green in a pony and trap and often
stopped at the "Queens Head."
His father, my great great grandfather was Joseph Ball(s) landlord of
the "Chequers," Crouch Lane c1891-1902.
Towards the end of this time, when in his 70’s, he was hit on the
head by the well bucket handle. Although he recovered, not surprisingly
this hastened his demise.
