The only reference I have found so far for this pub is in the Pigot's Directory of 1832. I am informed that the original pub was rebuilt in 1904 and set back across the pavement. The milestone remains in place still today (2018).

South Eastern Gazette 30 September 1851.

ELTHAM. SUICIDE OF A SPORTING MAN.

An inquest was held on Saturday, before C. J. Carttar, Esq., at the "Chequers Inn," Eltham, touching the death of J. Styles, late and for many years the landlord of that inn. It was proved that he was found hanging in an outhouse, with a cord tied round his neck. He had been in a desponding way lately, and it is understood that his affairs have been in an unsatisfactory state for some time past.

A verdict of "Temporary insanity" was returned.

From the Borough of Greenwich Free Press, 21 August, 1858.

PETTY SESSIONS, CROOMS HILL. SATURDAY.

Present — Sir T. M. Wilson, Bart-, John Sutton, Esq. and Colonel Grant.

FALSE WEIGHTS AND MEASURES.

The following persons were fined, with costs, upon informations by Messrs. John and John W. Farmer, inspectors of weights and measures, Straight’s-mouth. Greenwich:—

Mary Ann Styles, "Chequers," Eltham, 3 measures, fined 5s.

I am informed in 2016 that the pub is now operating as the "Draughts."
