The premises opened in August 2014 and is operating as a micro pub and was previously part of the vets practice, hence the name of "Dog House."

It is planned that beer will also be brewed on the premises.

This is now happening and the brewery is called the "Sunshine Brewery Ltd." Karen left in August 2016 and the attached brewery have only made test brews so far.

The Dog House, Smeeth.

Interview with owner and Brewster, Karen Sunshine:

Q: How would you describe the venue?

A: Situated in the heart of the charming traditional barns, oast houses and buildings that make up Evegate Business and Retail Park in Smeeth near Ashford, The Dog House micropub and brewery is a great place to socialise over a glass or two with friends.

The Dog House offers a warm environment comprising an eclectic mixture of furniture and furnishings that include old bus seats, church pews, a ‘kitsch corner’ (complete with a ‘60s cocktail bar and pink flamingos) all set to a background of old rock and blues music.

Q: What is there to drink?

A: Four real ales direct from the cask, a fabulous selection of single malt whiskies (and other spirits), wines by the glass or bottle and not to mention, speciality teas, coffees and soft drinks too. In the main we concentrate on showcasing the wonderful beers available in Kent. There are so many marvellous micro-breweries in the county, around 40 now.

Kent is truly regaining its old reputation for being at the forefront of British beer making after so many years in the doldrums.

Q: And the food?

A: It offers a simple menu including delicious home-made soups and mains. Children and pets are welcome, and there’s even free biscuits for hungry dogs!

Q: Why The Dog House?

A: Well it’s a place I’ve always found myself to be in so it seemed appropriate!

No seriously, it used to be the home of the old vets at Evegate so with the double play, the name just seemed to fit perfectly.

Q: Are you brewing your own beers yet?

A: Not yet - but soon hopefully - although I seem to keep saying that. The micropub side has taken over our lives so it’s difficult finding the time but I’m determined to be in production within the next few months. Watch this space!

The Dog House is open 11am to 3pm Monday to Wednesday, 11am to 7pm Thursday, 11am to 9pm Friday and 11am to 5pm Saturday www.thedoghousepub.co.uk or call 07802 893910.

NEW LANDLORD: Jim Miller, who took over The Dog House eight weeks ago, with Sam Quinn.

Q: You have owned The Dog House now for eight weeks, what made you want to take over?

A: The Dog House has a really good reputation and a great atmosphere and I thought there was still room for improvement. The retail park itself has a wonderful variety of business, many bringing something unique to the park which is growing from strength to strength.
