Erriott Wood Lynsted
Melville's 1858 directory stated that Mr. Thomas Elvy was the licensee of the "Fox and Hounds" and his wife was listed under traders as Fox Hunter. His son Thomas Edwin was baptised on the 3rd September 1854 and it was stated that the father was a victualler, so I would say the pub can be traced back to 1854 so far. Further research shows no mention of the pub in the 1841 census where it was addressed as Elliott Wood, after this date the address is Erriott Wood. In the 1851 census it is called the "Fox Hounds Inn." The census's appear to call this the "Fox Hunter's Inn," in 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1911. No name given in 1901 though. Colin Port tells me that there was no licensee present in 1901 as the building was either being rebuilt or renovated and the historic OS maps before 1901 show the building to be back off the road and after 1901 in its current location. I am informed by Steve Palmer that the pub was certainly still operational in 1955 as mentioned in the Faversham News, but had closed before 1988 when there was reference to planning permission for an extension.
