From the Kentish Gazette, 31 January 1865.
Yesterday. (Before Col. Dyke.)
Charles Clunn, a labourer, of Sittingbourne, was charged with
stealing 7s. from the person of Henry Richards, a labourer, at
Sittingbourne, on the 17th inst. The evidence in this case showed
that on the 17th, prisoner and prosecutor were in the tap-room of
the "George Inn," Sittingbourne, together with several other
labourers. They had two or three pots of beer, and prosecutor went
to sleep. He was awoke by prisoner putting his hand in his pocket,
he saw his money, amounting to 7s., in his hand. Prosecutor asked
him what he was going to do with it, and prisoner said he would take
it to the bar. He told him he would rather take it himself and
prisoner gave him back the money. Prosecutor went to sleep again and
was awoke the second time by prison putting his hand into his
pocket. Prisoner went away at once. Prosecutor missed his money and
went after him. He found him at the "New Inn," Sittingbourne, and
asked him what he had done with the money, and he said he had spent
part of it. Prosecutor told him he should fetch a policeman, upon
which he made off. He was apprehended by P.C. Walsh, on the 29th,
and admitted taking 6s. from the prosecutor’s pocket. Prisoner
admitted his guilt, and was remanded till the 6th proximo, to be
dealt with under the Criminal Justice Act.
William Evans was charged with assaulting his wife, Elizabeth*
Evans, at Sheerness, on the 16th inst. When before the Magistrate,
prisoner’s wife asked to be allowed to withdraw the information, he
having entered into an arrangement to allow her 7s. per week and
live apart from her. The Magistrate consented to this, and the
complaint was dismissed.
