I have found reference to the "Royal Oak Shades" in the census of 1881 which has a different address to the "Royal Oak" so I am assuming this was a different premises, probably connected to the hotel. Although the two names mentioned in the census said they were only grocers with no mention of a license for alcoholic beverages. However, further information found in the 1891 census definitely states publican.
