Reference has been made to the "Swan" in the 1881 census. The pub changed name to the "White Swan" some time after 1881, at present I can date the change no better than this.

From the Kentish Gazette, 8 November 1842.

Fatal Accident by Fire.

An inquest was held on Saturday at the Swan Inn, Charlton, before Mr. C. J. Carttar, Coroner for Kent, on the body of Harriet Hinton, who came to her death under singular circumstances. She had gone into her husband’s stable three weeks ago to fetch the key of the house, and as she was passing through the door, a truss of straw, thrown from the loft by her son for the use of the horses, fell on her neck and shoulders and knocked her down. She lingered till Thursday, when she expired. Mr. J. M'Donald, surgeon, proved that she had laboured under a concussion of the spine, which caused a paralysis of the whole body, and terminated in death.

Verdict, "Accidental Death."
