From the Whitstable Times, 5 November, 1870.

EAST PECKHAM. DETERMINED SUICIDE.

On Sunday last, about ten o’clock, Mr. William Hayes, late landlord of the “Merry Boys Inn,” East Peckham, committed suicide by shooting himself. It appears that the poor fellow was in pecuniary difficulties, having been obliged to leave his house, where he had been landlord for the last sixteen years, and this very much preyed upon his mind. His next door neighbour, Mr. Jones, saddler, very kindly offered him and his wife shelter in his house. After breakfast, on Sunday, he went out for a walk, and borrowed a gun, for the alleged purpose of shooting a pigeon. He went into a stable at the top of Mr. Jones’s garden, and shot himself. Mr. Biggenden, surgeon, was promptly on the spot, but his services were of no avail, the unfortunate man having literally blown his head to pieces. He was esteemed and respected throughout the parish.

The pub closed in 1934 and was also referred to as simply the "Merry Boys." One year after it's closure the "Mitre" changed name to the "Merry Boys" as the brewers Leney and Co said it would be a shame to lose such a unique name for a pub.
