Only found in the census of 1891 so far where John Swift was described as a beer retailer.

Further information found suggests the pub changed was originally called the "Ocean Inn" but changed name some time before 1891. However, it remained with the name "Victoria" until just after the second world war when the licensee in doing some renovations found the original name and change it back to the "Ocean Inn" again.

The Victoria Inn (Ocean Inn) can be seen with "Swiss Cottage' beyond it  formerly the home of the Newbie family. (In the 2024 photo.) The shop premises on the left is now the ‘Smugglers' Chest', formerly ‘Wellworths Stores' owned by Colin and Margaret Walker. Swiss Cottage was demolished shortly after the 1930s photo and the Martello Guest House and Tea Rooms opposite the Victoria Inn, were demolished in 1949 for road widening.

DYMCHURCH RESIDENT’S DEATH. PASSING OF MRS. C. SWIFT.

We regret to record the death of Mrs. Catherin Swift, one of Dymchurch’s oldest and most respected residents, who passed away last weekend, in her 81st year.

Mrs. Swift had spent practically all her life in Dymchurch, being born at “Barn House,” where she spent her early days. On her marriage she removed to the “Victoria Inn,” where she had lived for 55 years, most of which time has been spent managing the Inn. During this long period the house was exceptionally well managed. A jubilee celebration was held in April, 1926, when amongst other gifts, a clock was received from Messrs. Style and Winch.

Mrs. Swift leaves four sons and three daughters.

The funeral took place at Dymchurch on Monday, the Rector (Rev. G. Cuming) officiating.

Among those present were: Messrs Sydney, Harry, Reginald and John Swift (sons), Mr. and Mrs Bishop (son-in-law and daughter), and Brian Bishop (grandson), Mrs. Daisy Langford (daughter), Mr. Harry Eldridge (son-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. Bowles, Mrs. Piddock (niece), Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett and Mr. Charles Austin.

Etc. Etc. ……
