Built around 1949, for post-war development and to cater for an increasing population for commuters in the area. It is located almost opposite Bexleyheath train station. Whitbread purchased the site, but plans were continually being changed, and so the pub didn't actually open till late in 1956.

There is an urban myth that this pub and the "Drayman" are connected by an underground tunnel, but no evidence has yet come to light regarding this tale.

A Bexleyheath pub will be offering free gin and tonic today, in exchange for a very unusual currency - cake.

Greene King pub, the William Camden on Avenue Road is celebrating the introduction of Mrs Cuthbert’s traditional dessert-inspired gin liqueurs by offering a delicious flavoured gin and tonic for anyone who brings a slice of cake into pub on Wednesday November 14.

Sweet-toothed guests will be able to provide a range of baked treats to qualify for the giveaway, including traditional Victoria sponge, cupcakes, slices and cake bars.

The quirky offer has been announced to mark the launch of four new Mrs Cuthbert’s gin liqueur flavours at the pub.

As well the quintessentially British Victoria Sponge, the pub will also be offering Blueberry Muffin, Rhubarb and Custard Crumble, and a bespoke flavour exclusively produced for Greene King pubs, a Passionfruit Pavlova gin.

Peter Doyle, general manager at the William Camden, said: “The trend for flavoured gins is huge at the moment, and what better way to enjoy iconic British flavours than with a free glass of dessert-inspired gin and tonic!

“Mrs Cuthbert’s dessert-infused gin liqueurs are inspired by 1940s home-baking, with fun and nostalgic flavours that make a refreshing alternative to traditional gin and tonic – we’re sure our guests will love them.

“We look forward to welcoming locals in for a mid-week treat they don’t have to pay for – it really is the icing on the cake!”

To redeem the unconventional offer, guests will have to visit the William Camden pub today and show a slice of cake at the bar for a free Mrs Cuthbert’s Victoria Sponge Cake gin liqueur and tonic.

Any guests wanting to try another flavour can bring in a muffin, a crumble or a pavlova instead, in exchange for the corresponding flavoured gin and tonic.

There is one drink permitted per person and guests will need to be quick to get hold of one, as the offer is only available while stocks last.

England football star Razor Ruddock re-opens William Camden pub in Bexleyheath after six-figure refurbishment.

Former footballer and I'm a Celebrity contestant Neil "Razor" Ruddock has cut the ribbon on a pub makeover.

The William Camden pub in Bexleyheath has reopened following a six-figure investment and the ex-England footballer was there last weekend to do the honours.

The pub in Avenue Road shut its doors at the start of October to undergo renovation works.

As part of the refurbishment, the beer garden was extended to boost capacity. It now includes a new-covered section with heating and lighting and an 82" TV screen, allowing guests to enjoy sports action outdoors.

Inside, the layout has been changed with the removal of the front lobby to create an open space for pub-goers.

Part of the refurbishments included an extended outdoor seating area, where visitors can watch games on an 82" screen.

Other updates include new furniture, a modernised colour scheme and upgraded bar area and toilets.

The pub is popular for showing a variety of sports, so TVs have been upgraded to show the latest games on Sky, BT and Amazon Prime.

Pub-goers can join in on the action with the addition of three new pool tables, shuffleboard, three electronic darts boards and eight games machines.
