Open in 1994 the name was taken from a cricket term as the pub was built on land that used to be the cricket ground. A Wrong Un also being known as a googly where the delivery which looks like a normal leg-spinner turns towards the batsman, like an off-break, rather than away from the bat.

In 2022 the pub was put up for sale by Wetherspoons.

The "Wrong ‘Un" was originally the only Wetherspoons in the town with sister brand "Lloyds" occupying a large unit the other end of the town centre.

Bromley Batman or the Batman of Bexley? A woman says she has been saved by a masked vigilante in Bexleyheath.

Could there be a new masked man saving people in Bexleyheath?

Could the Bromley Batman have saved the day once more? Or is there another masked man rescuing damsels in distress?

Harriet Winger was on her way back home past the War Memorial at around 11pm yesterday (Thursday, July 20) after a night out at the Wrong Un pub in Bexleyheath Broadway when she said she noticed young men by two parked cars.

The 31-year-old said: "As I crossed over to avoid them, they came bouncing over like little children and starting asking if I had a light to which I said no."

The encounter was far from over however.

"They kept on walking after me then one of them tried to grab my handbag from me," Harriet said. "I resisted and he pulled so hard I fell over and into the road.

"I shouted out for help but no-one was around."

As the pair rifled through her handbag, it seemed as though all hope was lost.

It was now that something amazing happened.

"Then came running over a man about 6ft with brown hair, large muscle build, wearing all black and grey with a mask that covered the lower part of his face."

Could it be the Bromley Batman?

"He grabbed the man holding my bag and got him into some kind of wrist lock and kicked the other man straight in the face and he went down," Harriet said.

"The guys in the other car screeched away and drove off.

"He then laid the man in the wrist lock on the floor and looked around at me whilst holding him down and said 'come here, it's ok, take your bag'."

Overwhelmed by the situation, Harriet was lost for words.

The masked man on the other hand had a message for the damsel in distress.

"It's ok, my name's Guardian, don't be scared," the vigilante said. "Look at these men, you never need to fear them ever."

Harriet then took her bag and ran away as fast as her heels allowed and never looked back.

Could this Guardian be the same man who less than a month ago saved a couple on their way back from a romantic night out in Croydon?

Harriet isn't so sure.

"I don't think this was him because of the way he has been described and the name he gave me," she said.

Looks like there's a new hero in town.

Is there anything right? PubSpy reviews The Wrong 'Un in Bexleyheath.

No words that I can muster will do this pub justice - it will continue to baffle me to my dying days.

The Wrong Un in Broadway, Bexleyheath. What a boozer.

It's dark, it's dingy, it borders on depressing. The big three Ds.

Before I go any further, I would imagine based on my experience there are a loyal bunch of regulars who keep this pub ticking over, and I'm certain it gets more than enough trade from punters heading out into the town at the weekend considering it a stone's throw from a couple of nightclubs - but I can't say I'm inclined to ever return.

In fact once I've written this I hope to repress the memory.

One long bar stretches down the left hand side with staff that could muster a smile, but apparently not willingly. Booths fill the right hand side, with books as old as time itself lining shelves on the wall. I would be willing to bet they've never been read.

I think one of my issues, which maybe I'm overreacting about, is the fact there are no windows. The lack of any natural light, paired with the charmless decor, made me feel as though I was wandering into some kind of public house abyss. I'm sure this pub got bigger the further I walked, no end point in sight. You can wander the Wrong 'Un for days on end looking for a table to drink your San Miguel. Lord knows, I did.

The food I'm sure is fine, and the selection of booze is as good as any other Wetherspoons, which is pretty good. There were a pleasing amount of guest crafts, so there's that at least.

Bouncers line the doors but there is no air of exclusivity. If anything, I was jealous of the passersby outside and was scared I was going to be told my name wasn't on the list, so I wouldn't be able to leave.

I feel as though this pub does the exactly what it is there to do, serve a crowd waiting to go somewhere else. No one stays if they can help it, no matter how difficult they make it to find a door in the darkness.

Cheap, not cheerful, the Wrong 'Un does little right. Other than the price.

The Wrong ‘Un Wetherspoons pub Bexleyheath to close.

Bexleyheath residents are waving goodbye to a beloved pub in their area, as a local Wetherspoons announces its closure.

The Wrong ‘Un on the Broadway joins 11 other JD Wetherspoons pubs being sold in London as the company said rising staff wages and repair costs could lead to a £30m loss.

A Bexley Council spokesperson said: “The Council is naturally disappointed to learn of the closure of The Wrong ‘Un pub in Bexleyheath which is of course entirely a commercial decision by Wetherspoons.”

On the closure of the pub, Vic Beale, a local of Bexleyheath, recalled the first time he entered the Wetherspoons on its opening day 28 years ago.

He said: “It’s a funny name, The Wrong ‘Un, it’s a cricketing expression. For a long time they had a full-sized statue of a batsman in his gear inside the pub.”

Mr Beale, who lives a seven-minute walk from The Wrong ‘Un, learned of the closure last week while having breakfast in the pub when he overheard staff.

He said: “It will be sadly missed.

"It’s a friendly pub, many of the staff have been there a good many years.

"It attracts a lot of regular people in there more or less every morning.”

Regulars such as Mr Beale can be spotted on page 46 of the latest issue of Wetherspoons News, celebrating the 28th birthday of The Wrong ‘Un.

The "Furze Wren," another Wetherspoons located in the nearby Broadway Square, has been spared from the list of closing pubs.

The Bexley Council spokesperson said: “Whilst the loss of this popular establishment will be felt by some, we are fortunate that the Broadway continues to provide a wide range of alternative pubs for residents to enjoy.”

The string of closures forms part of the wider 32 JD Wetherspoons pubs announced for sale across the UK.

Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon said it was a “commercial decision”, and that the pubs will continue to operate as normal until they are sold.

Regarding the chain’s announcement, Roger Warhurst, a spokesperson for the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) said: “The pubs already closed or earmarked for disposal seem to have been selected more for their potential property and resale value rather than lack of trade or popularity.”

CBRE and Savills have been chosen to market the pubs set to be sold. After the news, CBRE senior director Toby Hall praised the “excellent mix of locations” among the pubs, calling the situation an “excellent opportunity for existing pub operators and new entrants”.

In response to the statement, Mr Warhurst said: “In today’s economic climate it seems unlikely that many other operators will currently be looking to expand their estates, particularly taking on pubs with relatively large floor-spaces to heat and light, which must make them more vulnerable to proposals to convert to other uses.”

According to Mr Beale, The Wrong ‘Un used to be a furniture shop before becoming a pub.

Whoever buys the pub may see other uses for it, but it could be tricky for them to turn it into anything else.

The London Plan 2021 says applications to change locally significant pubs should be refused “unless there is authoritative marketing evidence that demonstrates that there is no realistic prospect of the building being used as a pub in the foreseeable future”.

The Bexleyheath Wetherspoons is continuing to trade until it’s sold.
