The Elm Tree Pub in Beckenham was formerly named the "William IV." Earliest photographic records of the pub go back to 1869, when it was a tied house to the Croydon brewery Nalder and Collyer.

It was little changed until around 1900 when it was largely demolished and rebuilt to it's current form.

In 2014 the pub closed and was put up for sale. A successful campaign by the West Beckenham Resident's Association in conjunction with CAMRA had the pub listed as an "Asset of Community Value". This meant that the property could not be sold and converted for residential development unless and until a further six months on the market had found no buyer intending to maintain it as a pub.

Such a buyer was found, and after an extensive refit and refurbishment the Elm Tree re-opened in March 2015.

The pub is about to undergo another "facelift" with a proposed internal refurbishment early in 2020.
