COURT OF BANKRUPTCY. Sept. 29.

RE. H. G. MORTIMER.

The bankrupt, Henry Gladwell Mortimer, builder of Lee, Kent, and also landlord of a low beer-shop at the same place, came up on the question of certificate.

It appears that since the last bankruptcy, the bankrupt has been the tenant of the "Highlander," a beer shop, near the Blackheath Railway Station, his difficulties commenced in 1841, when he paid his creditors 7s. 6d. in the pound. He failed ten years after, when his creditors had the satisfaction of receiving "nothing" in full of their demands. On the third occasion the bankrupt actually paid 5s. 5d. in the pound; and on the fourth the present one, there will be no assets divisible among the creditors.

There was no opposition, and the bankrupt pleaded sickness in the family, notwithstanding which the Commissioner administered a severe castigation. A man who mortgaged his property had no right to run into debt with people who would get nothing. What surprised him most was that people should trust such a man. As there was no opposition, a third-class certificate would be granted.

The bankrupt, who appeared astonished, made a speedy exit from the court.
