The pub was originally called the "Carpenter's Arms." I believe the the Lord Holmesdale was named after the local MP of the 1860s, and member of a Mason Lodge which used to meet in the Carpenter's Arms under William Goodacre the Landlord - also when the road was called Brick Kiln Lane. A set of fine town houses were built called Holmesdale Place - so there maybe a connection to them.
