Reference has been found in the census of 1861 where the licensee was described as a beer House Keeper, unfortunately various different spellings of his name have been seen in different publications.

 

From the Maidstone Telegraph, Rochester and Chatham Gazette, 2 November 1861.

Mr. G. Beat, of the "New Market Inn," Tunbridge, (Sic) was charged with committing gambling in his house, on the 12th, ult. Fined 4s. and costs.
