Cross Street/Bexley Road Erith
I am also informed by Jim Packer author of the "Lost Pubs of Bexley" that:- Crown Street, later called Cross Street, was being laid out from the early 1860s and this property stood at the northern corner with Bexley Road. William Turley, the publican, who remained there for 25 years, tried to obtain a spirit licence at the 1870 Brewster Sessions. An argument put forward was that, since the extensive works of Messrs Eastern, Amos and Anderson had arrived in 1864, the population had doubled from 1500 to 3000 inhabitants and that there were only 7 fully-licensed houses in Erith Town. The Bench rejected the application without hearing objections from other landlords mainly on the basis that, in the whole parish, there were 19 full licences which they considered ample. Truman, Hanbury and Buxton had been leasing the premises from Mr Bayley, a local property owner, until December 1912 when they acquired the freehold. They immediately had plans drawn up to enlarge the pub/bar area and also to clad the exterior walls with their renowned green, black and white tiling. The pub was demolished in 1967 during the Erith town centre redevelopment and it is said, a wooden arm-chair and some engraved glasses survive from this pub, but I do not know the location of them today.
