Former Royal George 1952

Above photo, circa 1952, showing the Boy's Brigade (organised by the Baptist's) The house shown on the Station Approach Bridge was once the "Royal George." The "Royal Charlotte" can be seen in the background.

Originally built and opened as the "Royal George" around 1854 by J. Durrant. However in 1864 his widow sold the pub to the South Eastern Railway Company as the location was thought to be in line of the track, and so another new pub was built, called the "Royal Charlotte" after King George's wife, and that was eventually built on the other side of the track. However, it was not demolished and was to be used by the Station Master as his house of residence.
