The Kentish Independent, Saturday 20 July, 1878.
Woolwich Police Court. Saturday. Assaulting A Constable.
James Hart, 25, labourer, no fixed home, was charged with being
drunk quarrelsome, and making use of obscene language at the "Eagle
Tavern," Beresford Street, Woolwich, and also with assaulting Police
Constable Thompson, 137 R.
Mr. Cutts, landlord of the "Eagle,"
stated that at half past seven o'clock the previous evening prisoner
came into his house and commenced making a disturbance with the
customers. Seeing that he was drunk he was ordered to go out of the
house, but he refused to do so, and took up a quart pot, threatening
to dash witness's brains out. A constable was sent for, and on his
arrival prisoner seized him by the throat and threw him to the
ground. Police Constable Thompson stated when he got inside the
house the prisoner threw him down on the floor. He was about
administering a kick, which would have been a dangerous one, when he
was seized by Police Constable Cashford, who was passing at the time
in plain clothes.
Mr. Balguy ordered him to pay a fine of 20s. or 14 days.
