GREENWICH POLICE COURT.
Cutting and Wounding a Police-constable.
John Finity, described as a labourer, was placed at the bar on
remand, charged with cutting and wounding Police-countable Claridge,
157 R, while in the execution of his duty.
William Tissen deposed, that about half past nine o’clock on the
night of Saturday, the 24th ult., he went into the tap-room of the
"Freemasons Arms," King-street, Deptford, and saw the prisoner
there. He was making a disturbance about a half-sovereign, of which
he said, "somebody had picked him up." One man showed him a
half-sovereign, and asked him if that was it, and on his returning
it to his pocket the prisoner struck him in the face, and caught
hold of his hair. The landlord then put him out of the room, and in
getting him to the outer door witness advised him to go home, when
he instantly struck him in the face. A constable was on the spot,
and he gave the prisoner in charge for the assault. Witness saw the
prisoner throw the constable down, and kick him violently in the
face, he made several desperate kicks at him. Assistance then
arrived, and the prisoner, who was drunk was secured. The constable
was bleeding from the face.
Mr. Cregreen, assistant to Dr. Downing, divisional police
surgeon, said that about ten o'clock the officer was brought to the
surgery, and he examined him. He found a contused wound on the angle
of the right eye, bleeding very freely, also on the left angle of
the lower jaw. Both wounds were likely to be produced by kicks.
There were also two wounds on the hand near the thumb, the result of
a bite.
The prisoner, having heard the above testimony said he was very
drunk and was sorry for what he had done.
The witnesses were then bound over, and the prisoner committed
for trial on the charge of cutting and wounding.
