Originally called the "Hope" the pub changed name to the "Octavious Arms" by 1869.

From the Maidstone Journal, 5 February 1805.

Saturday an inquisition was taken at the "Hope" public house, Deptford, on the body of Mr. Isaac Woodby, who was found dead on the Lewisham Road, on Thursday night.

The deceased, who was captain of the brig Endeavour, left Deptford on horseback at dusk on Thursday evening, and at 8 o'clock he was found dead, in the middle of the road, in a mangled state, by a person named Lucas.

The horse, with his offside dirty, and the bridal reigns broken, was discovered in a paddock at Lewisham the next morning.

From these and other circumstances, it was evident that the horse had fallen on the deceased, and that he had received several kicks by the plunging of the animal.

Verdict, Accidental Death.
