Sydenham Times, 9 September 1862.

Charge Of Assault.

Charles Thorn, labourer, "Mason's Arms" beer-shop, Willow road, Sydenham, was charged on a warrant before J. Traill, Esq., at the Greenwich Police Court on Monday, with assaulting Mr. Thomas Elkington, jun. of the "Woodman Tavern," Sydenham.

Complainant stated that on the previous Thursday the prisoner was using threats to his (complainant's) father, and on going to his assistance the prisoner struck him a violent blow on the face with his fist.

A summons had in the first instance been issued against the prisoner, but as he did not appear in answer to that, a warrant was placed in the hands of Edwards, P.C. 57 R. who took the prisoner into custody on the previous night, at Sydenham.

Mr. Traill said the assault had been proved, and fined the prisoner 20s. and 6d. costs, or 14 days hard labour.

I am informed that the pub has been demolished, but do not have a date at present.
