PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1775-

Old Swan Inn

1775

Great Chart Street

Great Chart

I am assuming that both the "Swan" and "Old Swan" are indeed two different buildings as is suggested by the following advert in the South Eastern Gazette, indicating that the "Old Swan" is to be sold. Perhaps this was the end of this one.

Kentish Gazette, Saturday 26 August 1775.

To be sold to the highest bidder, at the sign of the "Swan," in Great Chart, on Tuesday, 31st day of August instant, about 2 o'clock in the afternoon (unless before disposed of by private contract, notice of which will be given in this paper.)

The following freehold estates, in three lots.

Lot 1. All that Messuage or Tenement (in two dwellings) Garden and Premises, with the Appurtenances, known by the name of the "Old Swan," situated in Great Chart Street, and in the several Occupations of Ralph Stanley and Richard Elvey.

Lot 2. Also one other Messuage, Garden, and Premises, in Great Chart Street aforesaid, and now in the occupation of Richard Moore.

Lot 3. Also one other Messuage, Garden, and Premises, together with one piece of Meadow-land thereunto belonging; containing by estimation three Acres, more or less, well stocked with young thriving Oak Timber, situate and lying in the parish of Shadoxhurst, and now in the occupation of Venna Weeks.

For further particulars enquire of Richard Bailey, of Great Chart aforesaid, or of James Kennett or David Hughes, of Wye.

Mr. Richard Bailey will show the premises.
