Deptford

Not sure whether this is actually the same "Red Lion" as addressed at 160 Watergate Street, the "Red Lion" addressed at 198 Lower Road, or a different "Red Lion," but I have found reference to this one in the West Kent Guardian, dated 16 July 1836, of which a small part of the article is shown below.

Local knowledge needed regarding street name changes please.

West Kent Guardian 16 July 1836.

On Saturday last a jury was empanelled at the "Red Lion," New Street, Deptford, to assess the value of the premise of Messrs. Mussett, coal, rag, and rope merchants, which are about to be pulled down, to make room for the Deptford Pier, and also the damage for the loss of trade, &c.

.........

The Under Sheriff then summed up the evidence, and the Jury, after about an hour and a half, returned the following verdict:— for the freehold and leasehold property; £1,200; for loss of trade, fixtures, utensils, removal, &c., £473 3s. 6d. - total £1673 3s. 6d.

We have heard that the Company offered the claimants upwards of £1,800. before going to the Jury.
