Ship Half Penny token 1669

Above showing both side of the half-penny token stamped WILLIAM BROTHERS around the words HIS HALF PENY, and on the reverse IN DEALE 1669 around a Ship.

Mentioned in Steve Glover and Michael Rogers book The Old Pubs of Deal and Walmer.

This may have been for use in an inn but not necessarily so, it could have been for a Ship's Chandlers shop. These were very popular for businesses as well as pubs in the mid 1600's.

The Arms shown could just be a Guild Crest and not Arms as is public house, as these tokens were popular for both types of establishments during the mid 17th century, and were used to pay for goods in the premises named.
