The "White Horse," Church Hill is mentioned in a document, dated 1419, found in the archives of St. Nicholas' Hospital as "the house next (to) the "Duke's Head," late the "White Horse." This would suggest that there were two pubs, next door to each other, in the early 15th century.

The left hand part of this building is Pear Tree Cottage: the right hand, Cumberland Cottage. Probably the "Duke of Cumberland."

Next door, the building's called Duke's Cottage. As you'll recall, Pear Tree Cottage was mentioned as the "Duke's Head" and "Duke of Cumberland." by Walter Norris in his "History of Harbledown".

It is believed that the change of name came about after the Duke of Cumberland beat the Jacobites under Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden Moor in 1746.
