An off licence at Barming.

Mr. Pitman next apply for the renewal of the off licence of a house situated at Barming.

In answer to the Chairman, Mr. Pitman said the house had no name.

Sergeant Picknall said the house was situated in North Street. The population of the parish was 744 and the area 1,092 acres. There were 5 licensed houses in the district - viz. 200, 2 ale, 2 "on" beer, and 1 "off" beer houses. The population per house was 148, and within a radius of 300 yards there were two other houses.

Mr. Owen William Foreman, the tenant, said his house was a grocer's shop, and he held an off licence. he did a good trade in selling dinner and supper beer, which was fetched away by his customers. he did trade of this kind to the extent of 1 1/2 barrels a week.

Mr. Pitman, in addressing the Bench, called attention to the fact that a house of this kind was not included, under the Act, for compensation, in case of confiscation.

The decisions.

After a retirement of nearly three quarters of an hour, the Chairman announced the Magistrates decisions as follows:- The "off" licensed house at Barming, refused.

I do know of an "off" license that is situated just off North Street and addressed at 16 Bull Orchard that is today (2017) a Post Office and Off license called the "Best One." At present I do not know whether this is indeed the same premises as mentioned above.
