Amazon and Tiger 1904

Above photo, 1904, showing the original building. Kindly sent by Tom Baines. It shows the various members of the Bishop family. The men-folk ran the forge next door and Esther ran the beer house until her death in 1886, when one of her sons took over. It’s dated c1904, ten years before the current "Amazon and Tiger" was built.

Forge Cottage the old Amazon and Tiger

Above photo from the book, date unknown, Pubs of Meopham by Jim Carley. Forge Cottage the Old Amazon and Tiger.

Ind Coope & Co Ltd purchased the premises formerly the "Old Amazon and Tiger" from Budden & Biggs Brewery Ltd by conveyance and assignment dated 23 March 1931. The pub at this time was unlicensed.

This building, address unknown was purchased at the same time as the "Amazon and Tiger" which did hold a license, but it is unknown to date when the premises was serving and when it closed. I assume it was replaced by the "Amazon and Tiger" in Harvel Street.

At the same time as this purchase, a Forge was also bought by the same from the same.

1840 gives the earliest reference to a Beer House at Harvel (now Forge Cottage). Licensee John Roots, blacksmith. I am assuming this is the same building.

LICENSEE LIST
