Ridgeway Smeeth
I am informed by Laurence Archer that there was once a pub in the village called the "Red Lion." It was situated along the Ridgeway, which at that time was the main road between Folkestone and Ashford. The pub was demolished at some point, I would guess at least 50 years ago. (Information from 2018.) There is no sign of its existence now. Laurence was told by the village historian, that the bar was large enough to turn a hay cart in. Presumably the standard unit of measurement for gauging the size of pub bars in pre-metrication days! Said to have been known as the "Black Bull" in 1681 but as yet no idea when the name changed. Further information says the following:- In the 1840s, William Braize, groom, was brought in front of Sir Edward Knatchbull for stealing poultry and taking it to the public house where it was dressed and served. He was sentenced to 7 years' transportation. This however, was overturned by his master and in turn he lost his job and it was given to Edward Friend his brother-in-law.
