I am informed by Laurence Archer that there was once a pub in the village called the "Red Lion."

It was situated along the Ridgeway, which at that time was the main road between Folkestone and Ashford. The pub was demolished at some point, I would guess at least 50 years ago. (Information from 2018.) There is no sign of its existence now. Laurence was told by the village historian, that the bar was large enough to turn a hay cart in. Presumably the standard unit of measurement for gauging the size of pub bars in pre-metrication days!

Said to have been known as the "Black Bull" in 1681 but as yet no idea when the name changed.

Further information says the following:- In the 1840s, William Braize, groom, was brought in front of Sir Edward Knatchbull for stealing poultry and taking it to the public house where it was dressed and served. He was sentenced to 7 years' transportation. This however, was overturned by his master and in turn he lost his job and it was given to Edward Friend his brother-in-law.

From an email received 7 September 2024.

With regard to the Red Lion / Black Bull I have full details on my Facebook book page.

The cottages were demolished in 1954 and Springplace built on site in 1955.

The original rear wall location is still visible as it runs as a pathway in front garden.

As my parents have owned this property since the 70s I have deeds going back to the original public house when it was divided for the sisters.

I would imagine the historian who gave information to Mr Archer was Don Skeer (since passed on) a fellow member of the defunct village history group and family friend.

The photo on your site is one from that group.

I've also placed details on our village site. About Brabourne and Smeeth.

In addition to this pub I have listed several details of the other village pubs on my Facebook as my family has lived locally for generations and have a vast collection of vintage postcards.

Please feel free to add.

Regards,

Susan Boulding.
