From the Maidstone Telegraph, Rochester and Chatham Gazette, Saturday 20 April 1861.
Maidstone Petty sessions. Assault.
Harriet Hunt and Mary Austen, mother and daughter, were charged by
Elizabeth Mitson, landlady of the "Reindeer," Parliament Street,
Maidstone, with having insulted her on the 4th inst.
Before the hearing of the case the Mayor suggested that the parties
should adjourn and set the affair amicably.
They did adjourn, but to no purpose; and on the case being proceeded
with, a great deal of contradictory evidence was gone into, in the
course of which some very disgusting language was stated to have passed
on both sides, and ultimately the magistrates dismissed the case.
